OPENING UP THE CONVERSATION: BEING SINGLE
The "What's So" in Being Single
People who are single sometimes comment on experiences that they associate with being single. Some can be challenging:
My best friend just got engaged; now who will I hang out with.
"You are so great; why hasn't someone snatched you up already!"
Who can I ask to pick me up from my medical procedure?
Oh no- another single supplement if I go on this trip!
And some can be great.
I'm so excited about learning to sail; my ex hated water, so we never got on a boat!
The Freedom! I love that I don't have to check in with someone else. Taco Bell every night if I want!
The confidence I feel learning to do things that my mother would have always expected my father to do.
Networks of Conversations, "Stickies" and "Young Conversations"
We live in a "network of conversations" about what it means to be "single", shaped by our cultures, families, and communities. And some of these conversations and ideas can be limiting. In the space below are examples of disempowering ideas that can stick to us ("stickies"). You can add conversations from your network (family and culture) as well as your own "stickies" and "young conversations" about being single by clicking here.
MAYBE I'M BEING TOO PICKY...
I DON'T THINK I CAN BE HAPPY UNLESS I HAVE A GREAT JOB AND AM MARRIED
THERE IS NOONE OUT THERE...BELIEVE ME!
SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE THE THIRD WHEEL
I'M THERE FOR MY MOTHER, BUT WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF ME WHEN I AM OLD!
SingleSpace: Empowerment, Possibility and Creation
By recognizing assumptions (through conversation, ones own experience, collaging, and exploring research that challenges stereotypes and cliche's), we can see SingleSpace as a place of creation and possiblity. We can live powerfully, whether we choose to be single, or circumstances have brought us into Single Space. Here are some Pleasures and Possiblities in the space of being single.
